Students at Fort Dodge used the Shopbot Desktop that was given to them by American Worker Magazine in the 2013 Iowa SkillsUSA Automated Manufacturing Contest. This contest has three team members that includes a CAD drafter, a CAD/CAM designer and a CNC Mill operator. They had to team together to model a part, run tool paths and set up and run the part on the Desktop mill. The team placed 2nd in state which was a great accomplishment for their first year. They were the only team to get their part complete but the contest deals not only with the finished part but also included a test that dealt with CNC terms/programing codes and a series of math questions related to machining. The team was made up with two 10th graders and one 11th grader… They are already working on their skills to win this contest next year!
