Rockwell BenchJaws

Take JawHorse to the bench

There’s a new bench vise in town. It’s designed like no other because this benchtop workstation has many of the same qualities and features as its big brother, the Rockwell® JawHorse®. Enter the new Rockwell BenchJaws™, a compact JawHorse designed for workbenches.

Here’s a portable workstation with a clamping spread of 37 in. and an incredible clamping force of one metric ton that can hold loads up to 600 lbs. At the end of the day, this collapsible workstation can be thrown in the bed of a pickup truck or stored in a corner of the garage.

Like JawHorse, space-saving BenchJaws delivers hands-free clamping right from the workbench. The jaws, like the JawHorse are foot-pedal activated leaving the operator’s hands free to handle the workpiece. It mounts to a corner of a workbench through a steel, L-shaped plate. This two-position mount allows for 90° rotation. In operation, the vise has the same patented foot pedal design as the JawHorse. With each pedal stroke, the jaws close by 3/4 in. This pumping action compresses the jaws until the workpiece is secured. The jaws measure 6-7/8 in. x 1-7/8 in. and have a face plate constructed of non-marring polyurethane.

BenchJaws is ideal for builders, remodelers, woodworkers, automotive enthusiasts, light industrial uses, do-it-yourselfers, hobbyists and crafters by providing an extra set of hands to juggle projects and materials or holding odd-shaped objects. BenchJaws is constructed of heavy gauge, powder-coated steel for strength and rigidity. The 22 lb. workstation has a clamping range of 0-16 in, and supports loads up to 220 lbs. The vise generates up to one metric ton (2,200 lbs.) of clamping force. BenchJaw’s foot pedal has four adjustable height settings to accommodate the user’s height. The vise mounts to most workbenches that are at least 34 in. high. The Rockwell BenchJaws features optional accessories including the Extension Jaw Accessory, (RW9207, $39.99) and the Multipurpose Jaw Accessory, (RW9208, $39.99).

The Extension Jaw Accessory increases clamping capacity from 16 to 24 in. Constructed of the same heavy duty steel as JawHorse, the Extension Jaw slides onto the main body in place of the standard jaw.

The Multipurpose Jaw is self-aligning to accommodate both tapered and round objects. It houses three stops (dogs) for additional clamping versatility. Ideal for sanding, gluing and painting operations, it’s constructed of steel, weighs 3 lbs. and connects to the BenchJaws simply by removing the jaw pads and bolting onto the fixed and sliding jaws.

The Rockwell BenchJaws (RK9006, $99.99) and accessories; Extension Jaw, (RW9207, $39.99) and the Multipurpose Jaw, (RW9208, $39.99) are expected to be available in October 2012 through Woodworkers Supply, Menards,, and other websites. It’s also available through regional hardware and home centers nationwide.

The Rockwell JawHorse (RK9003, $159.99) and JawHorse sheetmaster (RK9002, $219.99) are available at Lowes, Menards, on Amazon. Com, and other popular websites as well as regional hardware and home centers nationwide. Another addition to the JawHorse family of work stations is the Rockwell JawStand and the JawStand XP. These work stands support loads up to 220 lbs., clamp work pieces up to 1-3/4 in. thick and raise them up to 43 in. off the ground. The support head pivots 0 to 90°, swivels 360° and is situated on a heavy-duty tripod base.

The deluxe JawStand XP has a micro-adjustment feature. This allows the head to be adjusted +/- 2 in., even under load. For instance, during cabinet installation, the work stand support helps pinpoint the cabinet’s exact position before installing. The JawStand XP also features a quick-release cam lock on the clamp. Once the clamp’s width is set, the cam lock allows for quick release and resets to the exact width every time.
